Starting hypnotherapy can feel like a big step, and it's completely natural to have questions. Below you'll find answers to some of the questions I'm asked most often. If you don't find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Hypnotherapy combines guided hypnosis with therapeutic techniques to help create positive, lasting change. Rather than simply talking about a problem, hypnotherapy works with both the conscious and subconscious mind to explore the thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and patterns that may be influencing your experiences.
Every hypnotherapy session is tailored to the individual because every person, every experience, and every goal is unique.
Hypnotherapy may help with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and personal development concerns. Many people choose hypnotherapy to support them with:
Anxiety and stress
Confidence and self-esteem
Fears and phobias
Unwanted habits
Emotional healing
Grief and loss
Motivation and performance
Relationships
Personal growth and self-discovery
If you're unsure whether hypnotherapy is appropriate for what you're experiencing, you're welcome to get in touch before booking. Sometimes a brief conversation is all that's needed to determine whether hypnotherapy feels like the right fit for you.
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a clear understanding of what has brought you to hypnotherapy and what you'd like help with.
Before your appointment, you'll be asked to complete a consent form and will have the option to complete an intake form. While the intake form isn't required, completing it beforehand allows us to spend less time gathering background information and more time focused on the hypnotherapy itself during your session.
We'll also take time to answer any questions you may have, explain the process, and make sure you feel comfortable before beginning hypnosis. While conversation is an important part of the session, the primary focus is on the hypnotherapy itself, followed by time to reflect on your experience and discuss any insights that emerge.
Every hypnotherapy session begins with a conversation. We'll take time to explore what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what you'd like help with, and the changes you'd like to make. Together, we'll identify the goals for the session before moving into hypnosis.
When you're ready, I'll gently guide you into a naturally relaxed and focused state of hypnosis where we can begin exploring the work together. Depending on your individual needs, your session may involve exploring memories, working with emotions or beliefs, guided visualization, or other hypnotherapy techniques.
Before your session ends, you'll be gently guided back to full awareness. We'll then spend some time reflecting on your experience, answering any questions you may have, and discussing any insights or next steps.
Most hypnotherapy sessions at Rise Within are scheduled for up to two hours. This allows plenty of time to explore what has brought you to hypnotherapy, experience the work itself, and reflect on your session afterwards without feeling rushed.
The length of a session will vary depending on the type of session. Initial sessions are often longer, as they include time to discuss your goals, answer questions, explain the process, and ensure you feel comfortable before beginning hypnosis. Follow-up sessions and other approaches may take less time depending on your individual needs.
The number of hypnotherapy sessions needed varies from person to person and depends on your individual circumstances, goals, and what you'd like help with. Some people book a single session for a specific issue, while others choose to continue exploring additional areas of their lives over a series of sessions.
There is no expectation that you'll attend weekly or commit to a set number of appointments. If you decide you'd like another session, we'll work at a pace that feels appropriate for your goals, your individual circumstances, and what feels comfortable for you.
Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation. You remain aware of what's happening around you and can hear my voice throughout the session.
People often describe hypnosis as feeling calm, peaceful, or pleasantly absorbed, similar to becoming completely immersed in a book, a film, or daydreaming.
Some people experience vivid images, while others notice thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, memories, or simply a quiet sense of knowing. There is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis, and no particular experience is better than another. What's most important is not how hypnosis feels in the moment, but the changes that can continue to unfold afterwards.
There is no single "right" way to experience hypnosis. Some people see vivid images, while others notice thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, memories, or simply have a quiet sense of knowing. Some experiences feel very vivid, while others are much more subtle.
Everyone experiences hypnosis in their own way. Rather than trying to analyze the experience as it unfolds, I encourage you to trust your first impressions and allow the experience to develop naturally. Often, the greatest value comes not from what you experience during hypnosis, but from the changes that continue to unfold afterwards.
No. Although hypnosis is deeply relaxing, it isn't the same as sleep. Throughout the session you'll remain aware of what's happening and able to hear my voice.
Many people feel so relaxed that they wonder whether they were "doing it right." Remaining aware doesn't mean you haven't been hypnotized; it means you're exactly where you need to be.
Most people can experience hypnosis if they're willing to participate and follow the process. Hypnosis isn't something that's done to you; it's something we do together.
Like any collaborative process, the more open you are to the experience, the more likely you are to benefit from it. You don't need to arrive convinced that hypnosis will work, but approaching it with curiosity and a willingness to engage gives it the greatest opportunity to be effective.
No. Throughout hypnosis you'll remain in control of your thoughts, choices, and actions. You can't be made to do anything that goes against your values or wishes.
You're free to speak, ask questions, adjust your position, or end the session at any time if you choose.
No. Hypnosis can't make you do, say, or reveal anything that goes against your wishes or values. You'll always remain aware of what's happening and free to choose what you say and do.
Many people do find themselves expressing thoughts or emotions more openly than they expected. This isn't because you're under someone else's control, but because hypnosis can make it easier to access thoughts and feelings that already exist beneath the surface. My role isn't to judge your experiences, but to help you understand them.
Yes. People typically remember the main parts of what happens during hypnosis because they aren't asleep or unconscious.
Just like any meaningful conversation, you may remember some moments more clearly than others. Some parts of the experience may feel a little dreamlike or less vivid afterwards, and that's completely normal.
No. You don't need to "believe" in hypnosis for it to be effective. Curiosity, openness, and a willingness to participate are far more important than having strong beliefs about the process.
Many people begin hypnotherapy feeling unsure or even skeptical. That's perfectly okay. My role is to guide you through the experience in a way that feels comfortable, supportive, and respectful.
Emotional responses are a natural and welcome part of many hypnotherapy sessions. For many people, emotions have been held onto, avoided, or pushed aside for a long time. Hypnotherapy can create a safe and supportive space for those emotions to be acknowledged and released when the time feels right.
Not everyone experiences an emotional release during hypnosis, and that's completely okay too. Every person's experience is different, and there is no right or wrong way to respond.
Hypnotherapy can sometimes bring memories to the surface, including memories that are emotional or traumatic. If this happens, you'll never be expected to relive an experience in a way that feels overwhelming or unsafe.
If difficult memories arise, I'll work with you to ensure the experience remains manageable. We may choose to observe the memory from a safe distance rather than experiencing it from within, allowing us to explore it without becoming overwhelmed. Your wellbeing will always guide the pace and direction of the session.
There is very little you need to do to prepare for your session. Simply come as you are.
I recommend wearing comfortable clothing, avoiding excessive alcohol or recreational drugs beforehand, and having something to eat if you're likely to become hungry during your session. You may also wish to have a glass of water and tissues nearby.
Most importantly, try to arrive with an open mind and a willingness to engage with the process. I'll guide you through the rest.
Yes. I offer both in-person hypnotherapy sessions in Melbourne, Florida, serving clients across Brevard County and the Space Coast, as well as online sessions via Zoom for clients throughout the United States and internationally.
Both options follow the same therapeutic process. Together, we'll choose whichever format feels most comfortable and convenient for you.
Your comfort is important, and there are natural pauses built into every session where you'll have the opportunity to use the bathroom if needed.
If you need to take a break at any other point during the session, that's absolutely fine. Simply let me know and we'll pause. Once you're comfortable, we'll continue from where we left off.
There's no expectation that you remain perfectly still throughout the session.
Online hypnotherapy works much like an in-person session, except we meet securely over Zoom. We'll begin by talking about what has brought you to hypnotherapy, answer any questions you may have, and then, when you're ready, I'll gently guide you into hypnosis just as I would if we were sitting together in the same room.
Many people are surprised by how natural and effective online hypnotherapy feels. Being in your own familiar environment can often help you feel even more comfortable and relaxed.
Yes. For many people, online hypnotherapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions.
The most important factors are having a quiet, comfortable space where you won't be disturbed, a reliable internet connection, and feeling relaxed enough to engage with the process. Many clients also appreciate not having to travel home afterwards.
You'll need:
A quiet, private space where you won't be disturbed.
A reliable internet connection.
A device with a camera and microphone.
A comfortable place to sit or recline.
Headphones with a built-in microphone are recommended because they allow me to hear you more clearly throughout the session, particularly during hypnosis when people often begin speaking more quietly.
At the beginning of the session we'll usually be sitting face-to-face while we talk. Before hypnosis begins, you'll probably want to adjust your position so you're more comfortable.
Ideally, position your camera so I can comfortably see your face and upper body while you're in your relaxed position. This allows me to observe your responses throughout the session and ensure you're comfortable.
If you're unsure about the setup, don't worry. We'll make any adjustments together before we begin.
Technology doesn't always cooperate, and that's okay.
If our connection is interrupted, I'll reconnect with you as soon as possible. We'll also have a telephone number available as a backup if needed.
Even if the connection is lost while you're in hypnosis, you'll naturally return to your normal level of awareness on your own. You can't become "stuck" in hypnosis.
Occasionally, interruptions happen. It might be a family member, a pet, a phone call, a smart device, or something completely unexpected.
If that happens, don't worry. We'll simply pause the session, deal with the interruption, and continue when you're ready. A brief interruption won't undo the work we've already done or prevent you from returning comfortably to hypnosis.
Yes. Many people find the presence of a calm pet comforting and relaxing during a session.
The only consideration is whether your pet is likely to become a distraction. If they're happy to settle quietly nearby, they're very welcome to stay.
The ideal position is one where you feel comfortable, supported, and able to relax without lying completely flat. Many people choose a reclining chair, sofa, or bed with pillows supporting their upper body.
Being slightly elevated helps you remain comfortably engaged in the session while reducing the likelihood of drifting into natural sleep.
If you're unsure what's best, don't worry. I'll guide you through it at the beginning of your session.

Yes. Hypnotherapy is considered a safe approach for most people when provided by a properly trained practitioner. Throughout every session, you'll remain aware of what's happening and able to communicate with me at any time.
Your comfort and wellbeing are always my priority. We'll work at a pace that feels appropriate for you, and you'll never be pressured to continue with anything that doesn't feel right.
Hypnotherapy is generally a gentle and well-tolerated process, but like any form of therapy or personal development, it can sometimes bring forward difficult thoughts, emotions, or memories.
While this can feel uncomfortable at times, it is often part of understanding and working through the issues that brought you to hypnotherapy in the first place. My role is to guide and support you throughout the process, always working within your comfort level.
Not always. Although hypnotherapy can help with many different issues, there are situations where it may not be the most appropriate approach, or where additional medical or psychological support is recommended.
If I don't believe hypnotherapy is the right fit for your needs, I'll always be honest with you and discuss the most appropriate next steps.
Yes. Everything you share during your sessions is treated with respect and kept confidential, except where I am legally or ethically required to disclose information, such as where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else.
From time to time, I may share anonymized educational examples or case discussions to help explain hypnotherapy or illustrate a concept. These are always carefully anonymized so that individual clients cannot be identified.
Yes. Your personal information is stored securely and is only used for purposes directly related to your care and the administration of your appointments.
I take your privacy seriously and use secure systems and professional practices to help protect your personal information.
Yes. Sessions may be audio recorded solely for the purpose of preparing accurate clinical notes and supporting continuity of care.
These recordings are stored securely, are never shared, and are permanently deleted once my clinical notes have been completed, unless we've agreed otherwise in advance. You'll be asked for your consent before any recording takes place.
Not usually.
Session recordings aren't routinely provided. However, if we're doing a programming session, I'll provide you with a personalized recording designed specifically for you. These recordings are intended to be listened to regularly between sessions to help reinforce the changes we're working towards.
I completed my hypnotherapy training through the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy (IIH), a career school licensed through the Florida Department of Education's Commission for Independent Education. The comprehensive 500-hour training program combined academic study with practical experience across a wide range of evidence-informed hypnotherapy approaches.
My training includes clinical and transpersonal hypnotherapy, regression work, parts work, stress and anxiety reduction, smoking cessation, weight management, breathwork, and personalized hypnotic programming.
Yes. I'm certified as both a Clinical Hypnotherapist and a Transpersonal Hypnotherapist through the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy (IIH).
I'm also a Professional Member of the International Association of Interpersonal Hypnotherapists (IAIH) and remain committed to ongoing professional development.
No two people are the same, so I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to hypnotherapy. Every session is tailored to you, your experiences, and what you hope to achieve.
I believe meaningful change happens when people feel genuinely seen, heard, and understood. Rather than simply treating symptoms, my aim is to help you better understand yourself, uncover the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and create lasting change at a pace that feels right for you.
I've always been fascinated by people, their stories, and what shapes the way we think, feel, and behave. Discovering hypnotherapy showed me that meaningful change doesn't always have to take years, and that people are often capable of far more than they realize.
Today, it's a privilege to support people as they gain new understanding, reconnect with themselves, and move forward with greater confidence, clarity, and freedom.
Everyone experiences hypnotherapy a little differently, so there isn't a single "right" way to feel afterwards.
Many people leave feeling deeply relaxed, lighter, calmer, or more emotionally settled. Others may feel energized, thoughtful, emotional, or simply tired. All of these responses can be completely normal.
It's also common for insights, memories, or shifts in perspective to continue unfolding over the hours or days that follow. Giving yourself a little time and space after your session can be helpful as your mind continues to process the experience.
After your session, we'll spend some time talking about your experience and anything that stood out to you before we finish.
Within the next day or two, I'll also email you a written summary of the session, along with a reflection form that you're welcome to complete if you wish. Many clients find that taking a little time to reflect helps them recognize the changes, insights, or patterns that continue emerging after the session.
The reflection form is entirely optional, but it often provides valuable insights for both of us if we continue working together.
The reflection form isn't a test, and there are no right or wrong answers.
Its purpose is simply to give you a space to notice anything that has changed, surprised you, or continued unfolding after your session. Sometimes the biggest insights don't happen during hypnosis itself, but in the hours or days that follow.
Your reflections also help me better understand your experience and, if we work together again, allow future sessions to build naturally on the progress you've already made.
There's no expectation to book another session unless it feels right for you. Some people achieve what they were hoping for in a single session, while others choose to continue exploring different aspects of their personal growth over time.
If further work would be beneficial, we'll discuss that together before you leave. Ultimately, any decision about future sessions is always yours.
If you didn't find the answer you were looking for, or you'd simply like to talk something through before booking, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
I'd be happy to answer your questions and help you decide whether hypnotherapy feels like the right next step for you.
